Many of us take supplements to stay healthy, and sometimes it gets a little confusing as to why we take them.
For years we’ve been hearing about Omega 3 fatty acids and that we should be taking them for our health and well being.
Why are Omega 3 fatty acids important?
“Studies in humans have shown that greater long-chain omega-3 intake correlates with better brain function, reduced risk for dementia, lower beta-amyloid levels, higher total brain volume, and lower carotid IMT scores” according to Doctor Steven Masley of the “Better Brain Solution”.
“The most studied and important long-chain omega-3 fats are DHA and EPA.”
EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid) supports joint mobility, healthy heart and circulatory system, and encourages healthy cell function.
Research shows that EPA supports psychological disorders caused by brain inflammation.
DHA (DocosaHexaenoic acid) helps increase blood flow to the brain during mental tasks and may help reduce cancer risk through its anti-inflammatory effects.
It may help improve or prevent heart disease, depression, Alzheimer’s disease, and rheumatoid arthritis.
“DHA has more anti-inflammatory and triglyceride-lowering capacity than EPA, but both DHA and EPA are beneficial, and both forms occur in natural fish oil.”
“If you are a vegetarian and don’t consume fish, seaweed food sources have the same long-chain omega-3s.”
According to Mercola.com “Omega 3 benefits cover many areas of health, from mental and behavioral health to preventing premature death from disease, including the following:
- Coronary heart disease and stroke
- Essential fatty acid deficiency in infancy (retinal and brain development)
- General brain function, including memory and Parkinson’s disease
- Autoimmune disorders, e.g. lupus and nephropathy
- Crohn’s disease
- Cancers of the breast, colon, and prostate
- Rheumatoid arthritis“
Could I get Omega 3s from Fish?
Yes, you can get Omega 3s from fish.
A five-ounce serving of omega-3-rich seafood at least twice a week is what’s recommended.
Dr. Masley says to “choose fatty cold-water fish for maximum long-chain omega-3s—think salmon and sardines, as opposed to white fish such as cod, grouper, or tilapia“.
“There is nothing wrong with those varieties if they’re responsibly sourced, but when it comes to omega-3 content, fatty cold-water fish are superior.
“Wild- caught usually contain more omega-3s than farm-raised and are less worrisome with regard to mercury and pesticide levels.”
Do Omega 3 supplements have an after taste?
If you don’t want to eat fish, you could also take a high-quality fish oil supplement.
Some make you burp or taste fishy.
Nordic Naturals products are gluten and dairy-free with no artificial colors or preservatives, and crafted from wild-caught, omega-rich fish.
They have a slight lemon taste and are burp free with no fish after taste.
One serving a day equals two capsules.
Two capsules contain 1280 of total Omega 3s which includes 650 EPA and 450 DHA.
How many milligrams of Omega 3 do we need?
If you decide that you’d like to take Omega 3 supplements, speak to your physician about how much is right for you.
“The Better Brain Solution” says “fish oil containing 600 mg EPA and 400 mg DHA is acceptable—just not less DHA to EPA than that ratio.
Furthermore, whatever long-chain omega-3 supplement you choose should have at least 1,000 mg (combined) of DHA and EPA“.
Quality matters when it comes to these supplements, so make sure you check the expiration date on your bottle.
