What You Eat Affects Your Brain!

My husband and I attended one of Dr. Amen’s seminars in Bellevue, WA and we related to everything discussed especially when he said the  magic words “Food Is Medicine”!

He discussed similar principles that are mentioned in another fabulous book called “Food as Medicine”  Eating the right foods contributes to a healthy brain.

Dr Amen mentioned in”Use Your Brain To Change Your Age” , that people say that it’s expensive to eat healthy. It actually can be MORE expensive to pay medical bills down the road if you choose NOT TO EAT healthy. Take your pick!

The quote “Food is medicine or it is poison. You get to choose” is SO true. This is why you should eat healthy food and not JUNK.  Watch this very informative video on controlling your cravings.

Exercise Is Important For A Healthy Brain

Besides eating healthy, it’s important to exercise 5 – 7 times per week. A quote by Edward Stanley rings true, “Those who think they have no time for exercise will sooner or later have to find time for illness.”

As the book “Use Your Brain to Change Your Age” mentions, Physical inactivity is the fourth most common preventable cause of death, behind smoking, hypertension, and obesity. Exercising thirty minutes a day, five times a week, can make you look many years younger than your biological age.

In many cases, exercise can help depression better than popping a pill. Coordination exercises like dancing or ping-pong can  contribute to better decision making.  Exercise is one of the best and proven preventions for dementia, cognitive decline, and Alzheimer’s. Being Overweight Can Shrink Your Brain

As Dr. Amen says, “Your brain is the most energy hungry and expensive real estate in your body.” Did you know that as your weight goes up, the size of your brain goes down? Yep, it’s true!

Dr. Amen HIGHLY encourages eating an abundance of fruit and vegetables and to give up sugar and limit processed food. There’s a helpful list of the dirty dozen foods, in the book, that you should buy in organically. He also recommends getting enough sleep. Did you know that sleep apnea doubles a person’s risk for Alzheimer’s disease?

The Anti-Inflammatory Diet Is Good For Your Brain

Dr. Amen encourages the anti-inflammatory diet. One of the blood tests Dr. Amen mentions is the C-reactive protein, which is a measure of inflammation in your body.

SUGAR increases inflammation in your body, increases erratic brain cell firing, and sends your blood sugar levels on a roller-coaster ride?

Helpful Ideas Included In The Book

There is a great helpful chart in his book listing how much fiber you need per day (25 – 35 grams) and the foods you need to eat to get the required amount.

The book has a chart on ten brain healthy spices to help keep you young, as well as a list of healthy snacks that will keep you going in between meals and keep your energy level up. Certain lab tests are recommended, which are listed in the books and reminds us all to KNOW OUR NUMBERS.
