20 Secrets For Improving Wellness

WellnessI’m dedicated to improving “Wellness” in my life.  How about you?

What IS wellness? I recently found the perfect definition, “Wellness is a proactive, preventive approach designed to achieve optimum levels of health, social and emotional functioning“. Wellness is divided into 6 equal parts, Physical, Spiritual, Intellectual, Environmental, Emotional, and Social.

My quest for wellness started because “I simply don’t like going to doctors“. In my experience, I have found that many doctors have limited time to talk and I usually feel rushed. Sometimes they listen for a few minutes, hand me a prescription, and send me on my way. I had misdiagnosed blood-panel results with one doctor, another doctor yelled at me, and another doctor tried to send me for unnecessary testing. No thanks!  Actually, I AM fortunate to have finally found a great Naturopath, PCP, Allergist, Dentist, and Dermatologist.  I am very lucky, as they are all fantastic!

The other reason for my wellness lifestyle is that I like feeling “energetic and happy”. When I used to eat sugar and other unhealthy big meals, I felt and looked terrible. Although most unhealthy food tastes great, it does terrible things to a body. I’ve had stomach aches, weight gain, headaches, and loss of energy to name a few issues. I decided this is NOT how I wanted to live, so a long time ago I took action and changed my life. Unfortunately, I still suffer from asthma, and allergies, and catch the occasional cold, but for the most part, I feel healthy and happy!  Below are a few items that I attribute to MY well-being:

    1. Follow an extremely healthy and sugar-free diet
    2. Drink lots of water
    3. Avoid alcohol, drugs, and smoking
    4. Exercise regularly and get enough sleep
    5. Wash my hands frequently
    6. Stay organized and productive
    7. Get a yearly flu shot
    8. Take daily vitamins
    9. Keep stress low and laugh daily
    10. Maintain a proper weight
    11. Keep finances in order and enjoy my job
    12. Engage my brain by being creative and playing brain games and puzzles
    13. Take relaxing vacations
    14. Enjoy hobbies such as reading, digital scrap-booking, singing, and video editing
    15. Appreciate my friends and family and engaging in a happy social life
    16. Enjoy watching uplifting movies
    17. Floss daily
    18. Play with my animals and hug them frequently
    19. Walk the dogs, weather permitting
    20. Take a preventive approach to health by scheduling a yearly physical, eyesight exam, mammogram, and blood-panels, along with Dental, Allergy and Dermatology appointments.

Here are a few benefits of maintaining a healthy lifestyle:

* Normal Blood Pressure reading
* Normal Mammogram

I love it that you’ve thought about your health and wellness enought to make a Top 20 list! Good for you for being proactive! It’s much easier to prevent a disease/condition than it is to cure it!!
A suggestion re: flu shots – it seems that you do a lot to enhance your immunity – supplements, good sleep habits, avoid sugar and alcohol,keep stress low and laugh daily, enjoy good friends, take vacations and flush your system with lots of water. Are you sure you need those chemicals from the flu shot floating around your bloodstream? When your immune system is strong, you can fight off most infections on your own. I take care of myself too and I’ve never gotten a flu shot and never will.

Kim says:

Hi Wendy, thanks for all the kind words! Re: Flu shots, my allergist wants me to have them because I have really bad asthma. When I get a cold or flu, it usually goes into something MUCH worse and the asthma is HORRIBLE, and sometimes I’m sick for a month or more…wheezing and the whole bit. Scary stuff. You would think the way I take care of myself daily that this would not be an issue, but for some reason it is. It’s a good thing, I’m not sick very often.
